New Mexico is known for its many old historic buildings, especially when it comes to churches. Now a new program called “Nuevo Mexico Profundo” aims to ensure these endangered historic churches stay preserved. The inaugural events which include concerts, tours, and a feast-day celebration, begin in July at the Santuario de Chimayó and continue at village churches along the High Road and in Mora County.
The purposes of Nuevo Mexico Profundo are to raise money for historic church maintenance and restoration, to diversify the uses of the churches, to contribute to the cultural enhancement and economic development in rural areas, to increase awareness of the need for historic and heritage preservation, and to provide unique cultural experiences in historic settings.
