Dr. Stevie DeJuan Springer of Wise and Well visited the set to discuss natural ways to lower and balance cholesterol as well as the importance of its role in the body.
Dr. Springer explains that cholesterol is a waxy substance that the liver produces and that there is the good version, HDL, and the bad version of cholesterol known as LDL. He says that both levels must be level.
“The liver naturally produces the cholesterol and as it produces it, what happens is it travels through the blood cells, arteries and that’s the good cholesterol. We actually make it bad,” said Dr. Springer.
Too much cholesterol causes scarring within arteries and blood cells which then becomes HDL. By intaking a more anti-inflammatory diet, those cholesterol levels can be maintained.
Dr. Springer recommends the following foods to help lower cholesterol:
- Nuts and Seeds
- Wild-caught meat
- Whole grains
The following are foods with high cholesterol:
- Added sugars
- Canola Vegetable Oils
- Refined Grains
