Dr. Stevie DeJuan Springer, Rights of Passage youth enourage healthy lifestyles through gardening

Encouraging young men and boys to live a healthy lifestyle, local organization Rights of Passage sponsored by The Links Incorporated is helping young men and boys live healthier by cultivating their own vegetable garden.

Newton Robinson explains that Rights of Passage started a couple of years ago with the goal to teach boys ages 6 through 17 how to garden and its benefits. They also learn how to work within the community.

Beverly McMillan with The Links Incorporated says the non-profit group is celebrating their 30th year in Albuquerque and is part of 288 chapters nationwide committed to enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans.

Dr. Stevie DeJuan Springer of Wise and Well used the squash and zucchini the boys of Rights of Passage harvested to cook calabacitas as well as a squash medley. Dr. Springer highlights the health benefits of the green vegetables as they are a rich source of antioxidants and also provide essential nutrients without the use of preservatives.
