Deborah Duran honored Good Neighbor Award for helping New Mexico ‘Mask Up’

Going above and beyond for the community. The Good Neighbor Awards honors local realtors who put community service at the forefront of their life. The latest recipient is Deborah Duran. She is being recognized for her contributions to MaskUpNM. Duran joins New Mexico Living to talk about all she’s done with MaskUpNM and how she’s making a difference in the community.

MaskUpNM is a group of volunteer seamstresses who came together at the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic to fill the early need for masks. At the beginning of 2020, they provided reusable cloth masks to first responders and healthcare workers. As the mask shortage continued, they supplied masks to shelters, schools, and other non-profit organizations that could not afford to purchase them. In less than 18 months, they raised more than $550,000 and have sewn more than 65,000 masks. As various needs arose, they began to sew scrub caps, ear savers, drawstring bags, and sanitary supplies for additional non-profit groups.
